Apple’s iPod designer warns the metaverse could increase trolls and harm human contact. Tony Fadell claimed the virtual reality-based metaverse eliminates “face-to-face interaction.”
“Putting technology between humans is hazardous,” he added.
In the metaverse, people can construct avatars to interact in online worlds. It will be utilized for games, work, and music concerts, and accessed with a VR headset. Mark Zuckerberg is investing billions and paying hundreds to build a metaverse. Facebook’s parent company, Meta, now owns Instagram, Whatsapp, and Oculus.
“When you can’t look into the other person’s face or see their eyes, you don’t have real humanistic means of communicating,” said Mr. Fadell.
“Disintermediation creates more trolls, people who hide behind stuff to obtain attention.”
“We need to rediscover human connection, not more technology,” he said.
Microsoft and Epic Games, maker of Fornite, are also investing in the metaverse. Microsoft’s Teams chat system will soon have 3D avatars and landscapes. Mr. Zuckerberg describes the metaverse as “an embodied internet where you are the content.” People shouldn’t live through “tiny, luminous rectangles” like phones, he argued.
