We can now anticipate how proteins fold thanks to massive computational power.
Scientists have been trying to understand protein folding for almost 50 years.

This year, researchers showed that AI-powered software can predict hundreds of protein configurations. AI-powered protein prediction is Science’s 2021 breakthrough.

AlphaFold and RoseTTA-fold won.

Protein folding has been declared the breakthrough of the year by Ole Winther, professor of data science at DTU and genomic bioinformatics at the University of Copenhagen. Because it’s “very tough.” Scientists have spent 50 years trying to predict protein 3D architectures.

“There are others, but this is a breakthrough. AI, Machine Learning, and Deep Learning have been hyped for 5 to 10 years. First time AI has contributed so much to a scientific accomplishment, says Ole Winther.

Daniel Otzen of iNANO at Aarhus University studies protein folding, misfolding, and aggregation.

“It’s right. AlphaFold and RoseTTA-fold employ the 100,000 structures we’ve known for years to detect trends and forecast proteins. Daniel Otzen, who wrote an editorial regarding AlphaFold and RoseTTA-fold in J. Mol. Biol, says they built on 50 years of human study.
